Freedom to Lead, Support to Grow

Empowering Physicians Through Partnership

The greatest misconception about private equity is that it takes control away from doctors. At ReFocus, it does the opposite. We see private equity as a foundation, not a controller. Zenyth provides the structure, while physicians lead the care.

What Physicians Should
Consider When Choosing a Partner

When evaluating a potential private equity partnership, the decision extends far beyond valuation multiples and earn-out structures. The right partner will preserve what makes your practice successful while providing resources to help it thrive.

Culture: Retaining The Unique Practice Identity

The most successful partnerships maintain alignment between your practice's core values and your partner's operational philosophy. Ask yourself: Does this partner prioritize patient outcomes over short-term profits? Will your staff feel supported or micromanaged? Most importantly, does the partnership agreement explicitly protect your clinical autonomy? Look for organizations that view culture as foundational, not optional. At ReFocus, for example, team culture is "very, very motivated to promote" collaboration where every technician, optometrist, surgeon, and staff member plays an essential role in delivering exceptional care. The patient experience should remain indistinguishable from what you've built, with decisions guided by physicians who understand that everything comes back to improving patient lives.

Evaluate the Physicians Already in the Network

The quality of physicians within an organization reveals its true priorities. Speak to physicians that have already joined the network. Do they speak enthusiastically about the partnerships or do they seem "checked out"? Look for evidence that the type of physician and practice shares the same values about patient care, culture, and clinical excellence that you have. When physicians across the network are empowered by the partnership and passionate about advancing outcomes and sharing best practices, it signals a culture where medicine comes first.

Track Record and Experience of Partners

Promises during courtship mean nothing without proof of follow-through. Request contact information for physicians who joined the organization 2-3 years ago, not just the recent success stories they'll eagerly share. Ask those physicians directly: Did the promised autonomy materialize, or did operational mandates gradually erode your independence? Has the support infrastructure actually improved your practice, or added bureaucratic complexity? Are you happier now than before the transaction? Partners should report tangible benefits: access to advanced diagnostics, comprehensive EMR systems, improved billing collections, marketing support, and HR infrastructure, all while preserving the culture that attracted physicians in the first place.
