Dry Eye

It’s a condition that’s self-explanatory, but far from simple. Dry eye is a chronic condition in which the eye fails to produce enough lubrication to keep eyes comfortable and vision as clear as possible.

Dry eye is a very common condition that occurs in 48% of people over the age of 18 but becomes increasingly prevalent with age and is much more apt to affect women over 50, often with the onset of menopause. It can sometimes occur after LASIK surgery.

Causes

• Computer use
• Lack of environmental humidity
• Medications
• Flying
• Smoking
• Certain diseases/conditions such as Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren’s disease.

Symptoms

• Burning sensation
• Itchy eyes
• Aching
• Heavy eyes
• Fatigued eyes
• Sore eyes
• Dryness/”grit in eye” sensation
• Redness
• Light sensitivity
• Blurred vision

Treatment

Treatment typically consists of over-the-counter or prescription lubricating eye drops, as well as modifying behaviors. Taking breaks during prolonged computer use is advised. Sometimes using HEPA air-filtration systems, to reduce allergens and irritants that contribute to dry eye, is recommended.
