YAG Capsulotomy

YAG capsulotomy is a specialized laser treatment that can be used to improve vision post-cataract surgery.

During cataract surgery, the surgeon opens the transparent “capsule” in your eye that contains the natural lens. The natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. The transparent “capsule” in your eye heals to support the new artificial lens. However, following cataract and intraocular lens implant surgery, the “capsule” can thicken which causes unwanted changes in vision. A YAG capsulotomy improves vision by creating a healthy opening in the “capsule” to enable light into the eye.

What to Expect

YAG capsulotomy is a safe, outpatient procedure that can be performed by your ophthalmologist or cataract specialist. While your appointment may be 1-2 hours, the procedure itself usually takes less than 15 minutes. Because dilating drops may be used during the procedure, it’s recommended to arrange for a ride home from the procedure.
